What I’m Reading and Watching

It’s been busy, but still, I find time to enjoy a good book, show, movie, or two! Here’s what has been on my radar:

• Hadestown (the pro shot): Fellow Greek mythology nerd kids, it really is our summer. I’ve seen Hadestown twice on Broadway (once back in 2019 with the original cast!), but when the chance came to watch the filmed production on a movie theater screen, I jumped! It was as beautiful and epic and moving as ever. I always feel myself holding my breath at the scene where Orpheus offers the red carnation to the darkness as the lamps sway around him. Just gorgeous.

• The Odyssey: I went this past weekend and enjoyed myself! Odysseus is not my favorite Greek hero, but I have a particular fondness for this story because I read it first in high school, in Freshman Honors English, and made a colored pencil map on poster board of his journey (complete with Scylla’s tentacles and Polyphemus sitting on a rocky island) that my teacher hung in the halls for four years, all the way up until I graduated. The film was very, very loud and I wish we got more screen time for many of the characters, but it was entertaining!

• The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hartnett: This book was promoted to me as a wholesome, heartwarming story, and it is… but I wasn’t prepared for just how dark it would be as well! The twist was wild and I laughed out loud several times at the audiobook. It’s the tale of a retired man who goes on an odyssey (see what I did there) with his grown-up daughter, two children he has adopted, and a ginger cat who can sense death, all in quest of a high school sweetheart who got away.
